On-line resources (Portuguese text) - History of Japan and Japanese Culture

 

CHAM The CHAM (Center for Overseas History) is an academic center for the History of the Portuguese presence in the World. As such it is also dedicated to the History of the Christian and Portuguese presence in Japan, and publishes the Bulletin of Portuguese Japanese Studies (in English).

Penn State University A set of textbooks by Gregory Smits on Japan Medieval History, Modern Japanese History and Cultural History of Japan. A very useful reference.
Historical Encyclopedia Interesting attempt of an on-line encyclopedia on the History of Japan. Incomplete and disperse, but an useful reference.
Encyclopedia of Japanese History Another on-line encyclopedia on the History of Japan. More general than the above, it is mainly an introductory reference.
Samurai Excellent website dedicated to the history of the samurai.
Japanese Art Website of the Society for Japanese Arts
Traditional Arts Excellent website dedicated to the Japanese Traditional Arts, with links to other interesting sites.
Kabuki Dedicated to the History of the Kabuki Theater. Includes summaries of several plays.

Two sites by  Regis "Shoriya" Allegre, respectively with French and English text, are the best website dedicated to the Kabuki Theater. Includes images of hundreds of actor prints.

 

 

On-line Resources (English text) - Japanese Woodblock Prints

 

Resource Index Excellent website by Hans Olof Johansson, with a very useful and complete list of links to sites related with Japanese Prints. It also includes a discussion forum under the heading Q&A and an excellent database with artist signatures.
Viewing Japanese Prints This site by John Fiorillo is perhaps the best on-line resource on Japanese Prints. A must.
Ando Hiroshige Excellent page about one of the greatest artist of Japanese Print and his works. With extensive information an a complete set of images of his greatest series.
Kunisada Excellent site of Horst Grabner dedicated to the most prolific Ukiyo-e artist, including complete images of several of his series.
Kuniyoshi Excellent site of William Pearl dedicated to work of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, including complete images of several of his series.
Chikanobu Excellent site of Gary Gross dedicated to the work of Toyohara Chikanobu, including complete images of several of his series.
Toshidama Another excellent site, by Theo de Kreijger, dedicated to Kunisada, with complete images of other of his series.
Nagoya TV Excellent virtual museum dedicated to Japanese Woodblock Prints.
David Bull Page of David Bull, an artist living in Japan where he produces prints using the traditional techniques. Very interesting and informative.
Baren Forum Forum dedicated to the techniques of woodblock printing. Extensive information .
