Descrição |
Minamoto no Yoriyoshi (995-1082) striking a rock with his bow, from which a clear spring
gushed. The event took place in 1054, during a severe drought, and the spring, said to have formed the river Kitagamigawa, helped save Yoriyoshi’s army. At the time Yoriyoshi was leading a campaign
against the rebellious Abe family of Dewa Province, in what is known as the Former Nine-Years War. The Abe family had for years held prominent posts in the distant region, and had come to assume a
certain autonomy. They were tasked with subduing the northern barbarians, but, from the Court’s point of view, had become barbarians themselves. Later, Yoriyoshi founded the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu
shrine in Kamakura. |
