Man-Pai / Yasuji Inoue: Dainagon Yukinari

The print shows the apparition of Kobodaishi, the founder of the Buddhist Shingon sect and, according to the legend, the creator of the Hiragana writing and the Iroha sillabary, and a renowned calligrapher, as he leaves the Dainagon (title of a high officer in the ancient Imperial Court) Yukinari.

Yukinari had been ordered by the Emperor to restore some tablets originally made by Kobodaishi, but he was hesitating in performing his duty, fearing the divine anger of Kobodaishi. It was then that Kobodaishi appeared him in dreams and told him to proceed with the work.
