Man-Pai / Kunisada: Suetsumuhana

This print belongs to an unusual series with illustrations of the Tale of Genji, notable by the subtlety of the design and the atmosphere it transmits. It illustrates Chapter 6 – Suetsumuhana, which talks about Princess Hitachi (Suetsumuhana), who was living alone and consoled herself by playing the koto, a Japanese lute (click here to see summary of chapter).
