Itsukushima,
a small island southwest of Hiroshima, is one of the sankei ,
traditionally considered the three most beautiful scenic spots of Japan.
The print shows a courtesan from Muro, a harbor opposite
Itsukushima famous for its pleasure quarter, approaching by boat a torii
(or sacred gate) on the island, to participate in the annual festival
held there. The intent to participate in the festivities and dance
rituals is revealed by the drum on the boat. The courtesan hair and
robes are in Heian (794-1185) style. To the left we see her traveling
hat, with heavy red veil. When used the veil prevented anyone to see
her. |
