Man-Pai / Yoshitoshi: Taira no Kiyomori

 

Taira no Kiyomori (1118 - 81) was the first samurai to rule Japan. Leader of the powerful Taira family. In 1156, retired emperor Sutoku led a rebellion against reigning emperor Go-Shirakawa, with the help of the Minamoto family. Taira no Kiyomori took Go-Shirakawa side, and defeated the rebellion and a sequel, and governed as a tyrant. After his death the Minamoto family finally won, and started the Kamakura Shogunate.  The print shows Taira no Kiyomori ordering the sun to stand still, so that

Ink bleeding on the light colored areas on the left. Backing removed, with thin areas in the left upper cartouche. A pin size worm hole on upper right edge. Metallic transfer stains on middle right area. Margins partially trimmed. Paper lightly soiled,
