Taira
no
Kiyomori (1118 - 81) was the first samurai to rule Japan. Leader
of the powerful Taira family. In 1156, retired emperor Sutoku led a
rebellion against reigning emperor Go-Shirakawa, with the help of the
Minamoto family. Taira no Kiyomori took Go-Shirakawa side, and defeated
the rebellion and a sequel, and governed as a tyrant. After his death
the Minamoto family finally won, and started the Kamakura Shogunate.
