The figure
in the image is Hidetsugu, adoptive son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who ruled Japan at the end of the sixteen century.
When a natural son was born to Hideyoshi, Hidetsugu was exiled and later
forced to commit suicide. Hidetsugu, who was famous for his cruelty, is
shown here in meditation, while in exile. The poem in the cartouche says: “Did
I ever imagine that - as the clouds of the high autumn sky cleared - I
would view the moon through a bamboo lattice window”. |
