Saito Kuranosuke was a retainer of Akechi Mitsuhide, who was killed in 1582 after murdering the shogun Oda Nobunaga. Forced to flee, The image is noted by the contrast between the placid surroundings, with the serene waters of the lake in the background, and the disturbing traces of the figures, in particular the unsettling expression of the horse eyes and the disheveled look of the figure. |
