The title
identifies the figure as Ono no Takamura, a court official during the
ninth century. However the composition relates to Ceng Shen (506-437
BC), an important disciple of Confucious, generally credited with the
compilation of the Twenty Four Paragons of Filial Piety in China. Ceng Shen
included himself in the list following one incident ocurred while he was
gathering wood. Suddenly he became aware that his parents needed him
and, leaving the gathered wood, he rushed home. There arrived, he found
out that his mother has missed him so much she had even bitten her
finger. The
print shows the moment when Ceng Shen gains conscience of his mother
need. Both the style and the theme are similar to print #57of this
series (click here). Once again Yoshitoshi
represents with great detail the human figure and other foreground
elements, whilst the background is sketched in stronger and thicker
brush strokes. Note should also be given to the mist that fills
the valley between the figure and the house, and that also creates an
halo around the moon, as both are pictorial elements that are very
common in the Nanga style. |
