Man-Pai / Yoshitoshi: Reading by the moon

The figure in the image is Zi Lu (543-480 AC), a disciple of Confucius who later became a government official, ands one of the 24 Chinese paragons (examples) of filial piety.

Zi Lu came from a very poor family, and used all possible time to study, even while working. This is the reason he is shown reading by the moon. Dressed in rags, Zi Lu carries a sack of rice on his shoulder to his parents, as he himself lived of wild roots and plants.

The print was designed in Nanga style, the style of the Chinese literati ,and its atmosphere is enhanced by the soft and subdued colors, the blue sky being the only exception. The technical skill of the engraver is extraordinary, faithfully reproducing both the detailed design of the figure and the brush strokes of the background.
