Man-Pai / Kunichika: Ichiwara Danjuro IX

 

Actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX (1839-1903), in the role of Umeomaru, from the Kabuki play Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami - The secret of calligraphy as taught by Sugawara (click here for more information). Ichikawa Danjuro IX succeeded his brother (Ichikawa Danjuro VIII) after his suicide and, in spite of his poor health, become the key figure in the modernization of Kabuki Theater during the Meiji era (1868-1911).
