Actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX (1839-1903), in the role of the female demon Uwanari, in the Kabuki play Juhachi ban no Uchi. The plays tells the story of the revenge of the late wife of an unfaithful husband. The prints shows the actor with a hannya mask, borrowed from Noh theatre, which indicates the presence of a female demon. Ichikawa Danjuro IX succeeded his brother (Ichikawa Danjuro VIII) after his suicide and, in spite of his poor health, become the key figure in the modernization of Kabuki Theater during the Meiji era (1868-1911). |
