Man-Pai / Hiroshige: Ekoin Temple

Hiroshige: Ekoin Temple - Edo Hakkei (1857)

Ekoin Temple, in Ryogoku, was the place of a famous sumo tournament. During these occasions a wooden drum tower was erected, on top of which a drum, seen at the left edge, was beaten to call the fans to gather in the precincts below. The image shows the tower in a clear spring day break, the red sun rising in the horizon. In the river we see the morning boats taking goods to the Edo markets. Across the river the Moto Yanagibashi bridge is seen. At the left side the drum towers is crowned by the the sacred withe bonten show that the weather is clear for a Sumo match.
