Hiroshige: Kasumigaseki - Sketches

Kasumigaseki, which translates as "misty barrier", was the name of a Edo neighborhood near the castle. The name derived from a control barrier in the road to Oshu. The neighborhood was above Edo bay, and had one of the most famous views of Edo, thus deserving the inclusion in the series "One hundred views of famous places in Edo" (click here) of the perspective from the top of the street shown here.

It was up this street that climbed the famous procession of the San'no festival , which took place in Hie temple. San'no was the Tokugawa clan deity. Click here to see a depiction of the festival, by Yoshitoshi.
